The Russian Railway Museum has opened an exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the inventor Yakov Gakkel

On May 16, the Russian Railway Museum opened an exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Yakov Modestovich Gakkel and the 100th anniversary of the first domestic diesel locomotive Shchel1, built according to his project.

Yakov Gakkel (1874-1945) was an outstanding inventor and engineer, professor at the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers, one of the pioneers of the Russian aircraft industry. He also worked a lot on various railway-related projects. In particular, in 1924 he created the first domestic diesel locomotive with an electric transmission, which marked the beginning of the glorious history of domestic locomotive construction. Today, this locomotive is on display at the Russian Railway Museum.

Visitors of the exhibition will learn the details of the life of Ya. M. Gakkel and the history of his most interesting inventions.

"The scientific and practical activities of Yakov Modestovich Gakkel have left a bright mark in the history of science and technology. His inventions gave birth to new directions, some of them ahead of their time. He remains one of the outstanding Russian scientists and engineers in the field of electrical engineering," said Vladimir Odintsov, Director of the Russian Railway Museum.

The exhibition will last until May 31, 2024.
